Femi van Elshuis
TheatreFemi van Elshuis is a theatre maker, writer, spoken word artist and actor. Storytelling and spoken word practices form the foundation of her practice, which is rooted in autobiographical experiences. Through theatre and poetry, she connects written personal narratives to broader experiences of identity, belonging, power and resistance, addressing the ways these are shaped by racism, love and the complexities of contemporary society. Her work shifts between vulnerability and confrontation, using language not only as a means of storytelling, but as a medium of affect. Through the rhythm and intimacy of spoken language, she creates space for recognition and reflection.
Op Nederlandse Bodem is a solo performance by Femi van Elshuis, bringing together a selection of texts from her recent theatre production Gelukszoekers and newly written spoken word pieces. Taking the experience of living in the Netherlands as its point of departure, the performance reflects on what it means to find one's place in a society marked by unequal opportunities, expectations and opinions on belonging.
Combining critical observations, poetic language and humour, Van Elshuis’ texts switch between everyday encounters and larger questions about social inequality, cultural identity and the pursuit of happiness. Presented in an intimate setting at Felix Meritis, Op Nederlandse Bodem invites the audience into a direct encounter with these stories, where humour and discomfort can exist side by side.
