Marie-Mae van Zuilen

Marie-Mae van Zuilen is an actress, singer and theater maker exploring a personal theatrical language at the intersection of kleinkunst (cabaret), theater and music. Through expansive, heightened forms, she brings what is usually hidden to the surface. In addition to developing her own works, she acts in various films and plays, and stars in the Videoland series Onopgelost. She is now beginning the third and final performance in her trilogy on sexual violence.

De 7 Kamers (The 7 Rooms) is the second performance in my trilogy exploring the aftermath of sexual violence. Over the past year, I have worked on creating seven characters, each a living embodiment of a different coping mechanism. Through song, text and embodied presence, I move between their emotional worlds, allowing the audience to travel through seven spaces where vulnerability, defiance, numbness, fantasy and resilience coexist.

De 7 Kamers is a theatrical musical performance in which the audience meets 7 characters in 7 different rooms. Each room has its own musical language, from softness to operatic excess. At the International Art Talent Festival, I present three songs and bring three of these figures to life. The performance sits within my longer exploration of trauma and voice and what it means to embody multiple survival strategies in one body on stage.”
